This Wednesday sees the return of the annual rugby league varsity match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities to the Twickenham Stoop. The dark blues of Oxford will be desperate to gain revenge over their bitter rivals following last season’s 40 – 0 loss to the light blues of Cambridge.
The Varsity match represents something of a controversial topic for many within the rugby league community. To some the institutions of Oxbridge represent the establishment that suppressed rugby league for many years, but for others the growing success of the Varsity match is a sign of how far the game has come in its struggle to break out of it’s Northern working class strongholds. The spread of rugby league throughout educational establishments such as Universities is an important staging post for gaining long-term access to the corporate support that is required to develop and maintain a major professional sport.
The game sponsored by Pcubed kicks off at 7:30, with full coverage on a special edition of Sky Sports Boots “n” All programme. Tickets are still available from Harlequins RL starting from just £5 for season ticket holders.
