Quins RL move for Bull's flyer Smith

Quins RL are reported to have signed winger Andy Smith from Bradford Bulls. The 22 year old player will provide much needed cover out wide, an area in which Quins recruitment had been causing concern for fans.

Smith’s decision to move to the capital is believed to have been influenced by lack of first-team opportunities at Bradford, especially given the club’s recent re-signing of wing or centre Nathan McAvoy. In the last few seasons Smith had found himself behind first choice wingers Lesley Vainikolo and Marcus Bai, although Bai’s departure at the end of last season may have raised Smith’s expectations of more first-team action this term up until the signing of McAvoy.

The wisdom of allowing Smith to leave has been a cause of concern for some Bradford fans given the perceived age and limitations of much travelled veteran McAvoy. For Quins fans the signing is a welcome one given current concerns over the strength of the squad this season (see here for further discussion). It may also be notable that Smith fits in with the club’s stated policy of building a side of predominantly British raised players, an objective which is being given increasing attention throughout the professional game.
